Mary Lee Elmore was born in Sumter County on Feb. 9, 1920, to the parents of Alexander and Katie Mathis Hancock. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Jan. 28, 2011. She was the widow of Lucius N. Elmore Sr. She was retired from Bishopville Manufacturing and was a faithful member of Hephzibah Bible Church in Bishopville.

She is survived by her children, Mary Lucia Lee of Bishopville, Harry Elmore Sr., (Barbara) of Bishopville, Carlene Elmore Black (Alan) of Lilburn, Ga.; and daughter-in-law Kay Elmore of Bishopville.

She is also survived by her grandchildren: Melesia Lee Walden, Warren Lee Sr., Timothy Lee (Laurie), Len Elmore, Ronnie Elmore (Tracy), Renee Ward (Buddy), Harry Elmore Jr., Gary Crainshaw, Vickie Crainshaw, Michael Black (Courtney) and Corey Black.

Her great-grandchildren are: Ashley Ryan (Garret), Andrew Walden, Warren Lee Jr., Lindsey Lee, Bryant Lee, Mason Putnam, Faith Putnam, Geni Theriot (Justin), LeeAnn Elmore, Lucy Ward, Chase Ward, Mollie Ward, Nicholas Johnson, Wesley Crainshaw, Jeffrey Crainshaw, Dylan Black, and Jesse Black.

She also had numerous nieces, nephews, and close family friends.

She was preceded in death by a son, Lucius Elmore Jr.; a son-in-law, Warren S. Lee; a grandson, Robert D. Walden Jr.; and a granddaughter, Julianne Lee.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Timothy Lee officiating. Burial will be in the Hephzibah Bible Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home.

The family would like to recognize the care provided by Sandy Culp, as well as the Hospice workers of Amedisys.

It is with deep sorrow I inform you Worshipful Brother James Isacc (Ike) Benenhaley passed away yesterday, 25 Jan 2011, about noon.  WBro Ike’s family has requested a Masonic Memorial.  Hillcrest Lodge will open at 1:30 PM Friday, 28 Jan 2011.  All Brethren all requested to attend the Lodge opening and to be at Long Branch Baptist Church at 2:30 PM. Masonic Services will be conducted at graveside next to Long Brach Baptist Church. Any further information will be passed on as it becomes available. 

WBro Ike was a Life Member of Hillcrest Lodge No. 397 in Dalzell South Carolina. He first joined Masonry at Hillcrest Lodge as an Entered Apprentice on 13 May 1971, was Passed to the Degree of a Fellow Craft on 24 June 1971 and Raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason on 29 July 1971.  For his dedicated work in Masonry WBro Ike was awarded the honorary title of Worshipful Master at Hillcrest Lodge.  He was awarded “Mason of the Year” for excellent and dedicated service twice. He later joined Spring Hill Lodge No. 188 in Rembert South Carolina as a Duel Member where he served as Worshipful Master.  WBro Ike Benenhaley was conferred the 33^rd Degree of a Scottish Rite Mason at Charleston South Carolina with Scottish Rite Masons from all over the world in attendance.  When WBro Ike worked in Civil Engineering at Shaw Air Force Base he taught Masonry to new Masons during lunch hour under a big old oak tree next to the old Civil Engineering building.  If only that old oak tree could talk interesting stories would be heard.  Worshipful Brother Benenhaley was a true Mason among Masons and will be dearly missed by all.

Bishopville, S.C. Funeral services for Gladys Rodgers DuBose, age 88, who passed away January 24, will be held Friday at 4:00 pm at Memorial Chapel Church. Rev. Paul Atkinson, Rev. John Hall, Rev. Gary Boykin, will officiate. Burial will be in the Memorial Chapel Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home.  Visitation will be Thursday 6-8 pm at the Funeral Home.  Mrs. DuBose was born in Bishopville a daughter of the late Furman & Irene Stokes Rodgers.  She was a faithful member of Memorial Chapel Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, mother in law and Aunt.  While living in Manning for three years she attended Cross Road Bible Fellowship Church. Surviving are four daughters, Pat (Michael) Ries, Hasting, MN, Mildred (Wilburn) Christmas, Bishopville, Christine (Robert) Bryant, Manning, Grace (Ken) Toler, Overland Park, KS, two sons, Jimmy (Doris) DuBose, Bishopville, Ray (Susan) DuBose, Lucknow.  She had two deceased sons, Donnie & Alvin DuBose, surviving also includes a sister, Betty Brandham, Sumter, two brothers, James Rodgers, Oswego, Maxwell Rodgers, Sumter, daughter in law, Dot DuBose, Bishopville, 19 Grandchildren, 42 Great Grandchildren, 30 Great Great Grandchildren, many nieces & nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, James A. Leslie Tuten Denny Gilbert December 19, 1919-January 21, 2011

 Leslie Tuten Denny Gilbert, 91, of Columbia, South Carolina, entered into the eternal rest of our Heavenly Father on Friday, January 21, 2011. Born in Hampton County, in the town of Furman, South Carolina, on December 19, 1919, Leslie was the fifth child and third daughter of John Jefferson Tuten and Emma Leslie (Powell) Tuten. She was the beloved wife of the late Howard Stone Denny, of Bishopville, South Carolina, as well as the late Robert Claude Gilbert, Jr., of Columbia, South Carolina.

Leslie graduated from Furman High School, earned a B. S. in Business Education from Winthrop College in the Class of 1940, and continued her education at the University of South Carolina in the graduate program for secondary math and guidance. She began her lifetime teaching vocation in Blackville, South Carolina, where she met fellow teacher, Howard Stone Denny. They were happily married for almost 12 years and had four children. Upon his untimely death, she resumed her teaching career in Bishopville, South Carolina. During that time, she met and married Robert Claude Gilbert, Jr., and they were married for almost 43 years. The family moved to Columbia, South Carolina, where Leslie continued her career as a teacher. She retired while last serving at A. C. Flora High School in Columbia, South Carolina.

An exemplary teacher and role model of leadership, Leslie was a member of various professional organizations which included the following: President of Lee County Educational Association, President of Richland county Retired Educators Association, charter member and officer of Kappa Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, State President of Alpha Delta Kappa, President of the S. C. Retired Educators Association, and served on several educational and community positions of leadership. She was an adult Bible teacher in the Sunday School program of North Trenholm Baptist Church, her church home.

After retirement, Leslie and her husband, Bob, were active in many volunteer organizations which included the following: Meals on Wheels, sitting with Alzheimer patients, members of the Elder Affairs Committee of the Commission on Aging, Advisory Committee of Users of the S. C. Retirement System, and worked with the American Association of Retired Persons. They spent many years traveling the world together.

Surviving their beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother are her four children: Dr. Howard Stone Denny, Jr. (Linda) of Columbia, S. C., Linda Denny Moore (Bruce) of Charleston, S. C., Deborah Denny Gahagen of Columbia, S. C., and Dennis Rockford Denny (Sandy) of Norville, Mich.; her nine grandchildren: Erin Denny Whaley (Cameron) of Canton, Ga., Howard Stone "Tradd" Denny, III, (Sabra) of Lexington, S. C., Dr. Kimberly Moore Martin (Dr. Bill) of Beaufort, S. C., Joshua Bruce Moore of Charleston, S. C., Robert Dallen Gahagen, Richard Dean Gahagen, and Russell Derek Gahagen of Columbia, S. C., John Michael Denny (Danielle) of Sumter, S. C., and Kyle Christian Denny of Norville, Mich.; her six great-grandchildren: Reece Stone and Eva Marie Whaley of Canton, Ga., Taylor Shalyn Denny of Lexington, S. C., Kidron Grace, Kendall Faith, and William Dennis Martin, IV, of Beaufort, S. C.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A graveside service celebrating the life of Leslie Tuten Denny Gilbert will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 24, 2011 in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until the hour of the service on Monday at Greenlawn Funeral Home. Barry Dale Smith, 66, husband of Linda Langdon Smith, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at his home.

Born in Florence, he was a son of the late Cecil Bradford Smith and the late Teressa Hatfield Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of Elliott Baptist Church and was retired from the South Carolina Department of Corrections. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Survivors besides his wife include four children, Christy E. Smith, David J. Smith (Katharina), Jennifer L. Smith, and William B. Smith; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday in the Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Billy Griffith officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service and other times at the home, 1490 Elliott Hwy., Bishopville.

Florrie Salvo Reynolds, 87, widow of Hubert Edens Reynolds of Sumter, passed away Thursday, January 6, 2011, at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, N.C.

Having formerly resided in Sumter and Bishopville, she was currently residing at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Elkin, N.C.

Born in Conway, she was the daughter of the late Claude H. and Marie Godfrey Salvo. She was a member of Harmony Baptist Church in Bishopville.

Survivors include a son, Robert J. Reynolds and wife, Kimberly, of Bandera, Texas; a daughter, Evelyn (Lynne) Bovender and husband, Michael, of Elkin; a granddaughter, Tracie Lynne Aultman and husband, Cliff, of Gaston; and a sister Adelaide Whelchel of Tucson, Ariz.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Stephen Y. Salvo; and two sisters, Marie Hancock and Elizabeth (Lib) Baker.

The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. in the chapel.

A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Sumter at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Tommy Atkinson officiating.

Ernest Carl Koone, 66, husband of Mary Katherine Meyer Koone, died Monday, January 3, 2011 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter, he was raised by the late Harvey Hodge and the late Mamie Sue Hodge.

He was a member of Providence Baptist Church and the Sumter Lodge #364 of Ancient Free Masons for over 30 years.  He was a U. S. Navy veteran of Vietnam and was a retired Plant Superintendent of Phibro-Tech.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; his step-mother, Pearlene Koone of Florida; two sons, Karl Koone of Sumter and Michael Murphy and wife Anna of Lexington; three daughters, Kimberley Bartlette, Kellie Friel and husband Bill, Mary Beth Bryant and husband Scott all of Sumter; seven sisters; three brothers; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Rembert Koone.

Funeral services will be held at 2. P.M. Thursday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Rev. Stacey McDonald and Rev. James McElveen officiating.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors and Masonic Rites.

Rosa Lee Outlaw Nason, 94, widow of Laddie Nason, died Sunday, January 2, 2011, in McCoy Memorial Nursing Center.

Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late James H. Outlaw and the late Julia Dixon Outlaw. Mrs. Nason was a member of Concord United Methodist Church for 82 years. She was the owner of the Imperial House Restaurant for 33 years and the Kentucky Fried Chicken in Bishopville for 10 years. She was awarded the first White Glove Award in South Carolina for quality and cleanliness by Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Survivors include three daughters, Annette Wagner (Burt) of Ridgecrest, CA, Julia Bell and Alice Boykin (Ralph), both of Bishopville; four grandchildren, Sam Rainwater (Vicki) of Norco, CA, Donald Rainwater (Angie) of Florence, Matt Makela (Jessie) and Megan Makela, both of Bishopville; five great-grandchildren, Skyler Rainwater and Max Rainwater, both of Florence, Kelsea Rainwater of Norco, CA, and Daniel Atkinson and Gavin Makela both of Bishopville.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Concord United Methodist Church with the Rev. Cecil Stevens officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Barkley, Rob Teal, Kyle Raley, Luther Bramlett, Willis Frierson and Ernie Watson.
